Shochiku Home Video The Twilight Samurai (Blu-ray) (Japan Version)
    Rp 633.000
The first film in Yamada Yoji's acclaimed samurai trilogy, The Twilight Samurai presents a touching cinematic masterpiece about love and agony starring Sanada Hiroyuki (The Last Samurai) and Miyazawa Rie. Yamada Yoji has made every effort to display the complexities of the ancient Japanese culture and the art of sword fighting, which becomes obvious in this monumental movie whose plot is based on three short stories from popular novelist Fujisawa Shuhei.

Sanada Hiroyuki plays a swordsman who has to take care of his two daughters after his wife has passed away from lung disease. As he does not engage in drinking and other merry activities, he is sneeringly nicknamed "Twilight Samurai" by his peers. Miyazawa Rie portrays his love interest, a beautiful woman with a strong will from the family of his best friend. The two protagonists become mutually attracted, but fate does not seem to be on their sides.

    Rp 773.000
Immediately following the March 11 disaster in northeast Japan, director Sono Sion (Love Exposure) headed to the disaster zone to film Himizu, a bleak youth drama that concludes on a positive outlook for the future. Sono continues that outlook for post-disaster Japan in The Land of Hope, possibly the filmmaker's most optimistic film yet. Once again shot in the disaster zone in northeast Japan, the somber drama looks at life after an earthquake in a fictional prefecture sets of another nuclear crisis. While the film's setting is fictional, Sono's depiction of nuclear paranoia and unwavering optimism is clearly a reflection of post-Fukushima Japan. The Land of Hope may be restrained compared to Sono's previous films, but it remains a powerful, emotional story of nation standing tall in the face of disasters.

The Ono and the Suzuki families are neighbors living in a rural town of Nagashima Prefecture (a fictional place). One day, a strong earthquake strikes the area, causing an explosion at the nearby nuclear power plant. While the Suzukis decide to evacuate to the shelter, Ono Yasuhiko (Osao Natsuyagi) is determined to stay with his senile wife in his family home, which lies right behind the mandatory evacuation line. When Yasuhiko's son Yoichi (Murakami Jun) discovers that his wife Izumi (Kagurazaka Izumi) is pregnant, Yasuhiko forces them to evacuate, leaving the two elders all alone. Despite being away from the evacuation zone, Izumi remains paranoid of the nuclear fallout and its effects on her soon-to-be-born child.

One woman discovers the destructive power of the internet and social media in The Snow White Murder Case, based on a novel by Confessions author Minato Kanae. Directed by Nakamura Yoshihiro (Fish Story, Golden Slumbers), the mystery-drama deconstructs a seemingly open-and-shut case involving the murder of a beautiful cosmetics company employee by a "plain-looking" co-worker, played by Inoue Mao. Adopting a Rashomon-style narrative structure, Nakamura and screenwriter Hayashi Tamio (Golden Slumbers) show the devastating effects of internet rumors and how they can play with our perception of the truth. In addition to Inoue, The Snow White Murder Case also stars Ayano Go (Rurouni Kenshin) as a Twitter-obsessed reporter and popular model Nanao (Last Cinderella) as the beautiful murder victim.

A beautiful woman (Nanao) working for a cosmetics company has been brutally murdered, but the police have been secretive about the details of the case. One day, ambitious television news director Akahoshi (Ayano Go) gets a call from a friend who works inside the company and learns about the rivalry between the victim and Shirono (Inoue Mao), a "plain-looking" employee who seems to have plenty of motives to commit murder. Akahoshi's subsequent investigative report creates a huge stir on social media, as netizens quickly identify the secret identity behind the "Miss S" in the report. Despite not having been officially sought out by the police, Shirono has already been persecuted publicly as the killer. What is the truth behind the case? Where is Shirono?

Japanese rock star Gackt makes his Hollywood film debut in Bunraku, an exhilarating action spectacular from writer-director Guy Moshe. Inspired by the Japanese traditional art of puppet theater (which is what the film's title refers to), Bunraku is an inventive, audacious mix of spaghetti westerns, chabara cinema, and neo-noir. In addition to Gackt as a lone swordsman, Bunraku also features an impressive cast of Hollywood stars, including Josh Harnett (I Come With the Rain) as a cowboy seeking revenge, Woody Harrelson (2012) as a bartender, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as a villainous crime boss and Demi Moore (Ghost) as a dangerous femme fatale.

In a future post-war world, guns have been outlawed, and people can only fight each other with primitive weapons like swords. One day, a nameless drifter (Josh Harnett) and a samurai (Gackt) arrive at a city looking to settle their respective scores with the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman), the crime lord that rules the city. The two are brought together by a bartender (Woody Harrelson), who always has some wisdom to offer. With other groups of people with their own agendas arriving in town, an violent battle for the control of the city is about to begin.

This edition includes the film on both Blu-ray and DVD. It also comes with a bonus DVD containing an interview with Gackt and trailers.

The eclectic filmmaker best known for mysteries like The Inerasable and The Snow White Murder Case goes full samurai comedy with The Magnificent Nine. Tea grower Tokuheiji (Eita), who has recently moved back to town, suggests loaning a large sum to the government and then using the interest to help the townspeople. Though Tokuheiji made the remark in jest, Juzaburo takes the idea to heart and puts the plan into action by pooling resources with other more well-off residents to raise money for the anonymous loan. As word spreads, more people jump onto the scheme. However, heads will most certainly roll should their Lord learns the truth.

Shochiku Home Video The Snow White Murder Case (2014) (Blu-ray) (Deluxe Edition) (First Press Limited Edition)(Japan Version)
    Rp 759.000

This edition comes with a booklet featuring an essay by Minato Kanae, as well as a bonus DVD containing making of, stage events and trailers.

In fact, the story is so amazing that the space probe's seven-year journey in space will be the subject of three feature films - all released in the course of a year! After Tsutsumi Yukihiko's Hayabusa looks at the space probe's adventure from the JAXA publicists' point of view, Welcome Back, Hayabusa shows audiences the probe's space journey in cutting edge, breathtaking 3D effects!

In addition to the spectacular recreation of the probe's journey, the film by Motoki Katsuhide (10 Promises to My Dog), also follows the saga via a young engineer (played by Fujiwara Tetsuya) whose wish is to realize his father's unfulfilled dream to build a successful space probe. Like Hayabusa, Welcome Home, Hayabusa was also made with the support of JAXA, the Japanese space agency.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of director Ozu Yasujiro's death, veteran Japanese director Yamada Yoji's 50 years as a director and the 60th anniversary of Tokyo Story, Yamada Yoji pays tribute to the timeless classic with Tokyo Family, his 82nd film. A contemporary update of Tokyo Story, Yamada follows the basic structure of the Ozu film, but updates the original story's pessimistic message, which laments the erosion of familial bond in a rapidly developing post-war Japan, to a modern one that is more optimistic about today's young generation. At the same time, Yamada also recognizes that the fragmentation of the family unit seen in the original film is just as relevant today as it was back in 1953.

The biggest change Yamada and co-writer Hiramatsu Emiko make from Tokyo Story is replacing the family's widowed daughter-in-law with a wayward youngest son and his kind girlfriend, played by Tsumabuki Satoshi (For Love's Sake) and Aoi Yu (Rurouni Kenshin), respectively. The two are joined by a talented cast of actors, including Hashitzume Isao (I Wish), Yoshiyuki Kazuko (Departures), Natsukawa Yui (Still Walking), Nishimura Masahiko (Space Brothers), Nakajima Tomoko (A Taste of Tea) and Hayashiya Shozo. Featuring a score by Hisaishi Joe, Tokyo Family is a touching human drama that isn't just the story of one family; this is everyone's story.

Retired teacher Shukichi (Hashizume Isao) and his wife Tomiko temporarily leave their peaceful island life to visit their children in Tokyo: Eldest son Koiichi (Nishimura Masahiko), daughter Shigeko (Nakajima Tomoko) and unreliable youngest son Shoji (Tsumabuki Satoshi). Due to the children's busy schedules, Shukichi and Tomiko are shuffled around Tokyo from home to home. The two are especially worried about Shoji, who has been a burden on the family in the past and now barely scraping by as a stage set designer. Fortunately, Tomiko finds solace when she meets Shoji's kind girlfriend Noriko (Aoi Yu). However, the two parents' hectic schedule eventually takes a toll on them...

Considered one of the great masterpieces of early Japanese cinema, Mizoguchi Kenji's 1939 black-and-white classic The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum revolves around the trials and tribulations of a struggling kabuki actor and his wife in the late 19th century. Adopted into a famous kabuki family, Onoe Kikunosuke (Hanayagi Shotaro) has been training to take up his father's mantle, but his acting skills are not acknowledged by the rest of the troupe. Much to his father's disapproval, Kikunosuke develops a close relationship with Otoku (Mori Kakuko), his nephew's wet nurse, and eventually leaves Tokyo and starts a new life in Osaka with Otoku. As time passes, however, the couple's relationship worsens under the strain of poverty, and Otoku decides to separate from Kikunosuke so that he can reconcile with his father and find his place onstage again.

Based on the same Ooka Shohei novel that Ichikawa Kon adapted for his 1959 classic, Tsukamoto Shinya's Fires on the Plain is a relentlessly grim and gruesome vision of the horrors of war. Screened in competition at the 2014 Venice Film Festival, the film is set around the circumstances of Japan's retreat from the Philippines in the final days of World War II when the war had been all but lost. The maverick director himself stars as a conscripted soldier suffering from tuberculosis. Cast out by his commanding officer, he is forced to fend for himself in the Philippine jungle where he encounters one hellish trial after another in between the fire of advancing American soldiers and local guerrillas as well as the rapidly declining state of his health and mind.

This edition features both the 2D and 3D versions of the film. It comes with a documentary about Japanese space exploration, a poster of the white board used by the Hayabusa team, the replica of the Hayabusa team's badge, a 3D card, and trailers.

From auteur Tsukamoto Shinya, director of the infamous 1988 cult classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man, comes the 2004 psychological drama Vital! International superstar Asano Tadanobu (Zatoichi, Ichi the Killer) stars in the film as Takagi Hiroshi, a comatose man who suddenly wakes up, only to find out that he's suffering from amnesia. Upon returning home with his mother and father, Hiroshi discovers a stack of medical books in his closet and remembers that his parents wanted him to attend medical school. Although still suffering from memory loss, Hiroshi decides to go to medical school anyway. After taking the required exam and gaining acceptance to the university, Hiroshi slowly begins to remember his true feelings about medical school. Even more dramatic, he starts to recall that he had a girlfriend named Ryoko (Tsukamoto Nami), and that she was in the car with him when he had his tragic accident. But things only get worse when it comes time for the dissection part of an anatomy course. Hiroshi's memory floods back to him in shocking detail when he realizes that the girl on the slab is none other than his beloved Ryoko!

Tortured by this recovered memory, Hiroshi retreats into his mind, a world where he and Ryoko are reunited. As the formerly amnesiac begins taking apart the body of his former lover, he finds himself coming to grips with the dramatic outcome of their relationship. Hiroshi even seeks out Ryoko's parents, and from them he learns more about their relationship than he ever expected. Surreal, morbid, and multi-layered, Tsukamoto Shinya's Vital is an unconventional film about a man coming to terms with life, death, love, and his one true self.

The Feature Disc of this 2-DVD set includes audio commentary from director Tsukamoto Shinya and video game creator Kojima Hideo, of Metal Gear Solid fame.

Back in 2010, Nakamura Yoshihiro directed A Boy and His Samurai, a comedy about a samurai who time travels to the present day. The eclectic filmmaker best known for mysteries likes The Inerasable and The Snow White Murder Case goes full samurai comedy with The Magnificent Nine. Based on a novel by Isoda Michifumi, the ensemble period comedy rounds up both fresh faces and Nakamura's past leads to form his most star-studded cast yet that includes Abe Sadao, Eita, Tsumabuki Satoshi, Takeuchi Yuko, Matsuda Ryuhei, Yamazaki Tsutomu, Yuda Chibai and even Olympic gold medal figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru in his acting debut.

Juzaburo (Abe Sadao) lives in an impoverished rural town where most of the residents struggle to get by due to the heavy taxes levied by the local government.

Having worked together in Mozu, Ryusei Wagon and Double Face, Nishijima Hidetoshi and Kagawa Teruyuki face off this time as a former detective and his Creepy next-door neighbor. The two are joined by the all-star cast of Takeuchi Yuko (The Inerasable), Kawaguchi Haruna (Say "I Love You"), Higashide Masahiro (Gonin Saga) and Fujino Ryoko (Solomon's Perjury).

Criminal psychology expert Takakura (Nishijima Hidetoshi) left the police force under unpleasant circumstances, but he has since started afresh by taking up a university teaching position and moving into a new home with wife Yasuko (Takeuchi Yuko). When his former colleague Nogami (Higashide Masahiro) asks him for help on a six-year-old missing persons case, Takakura obliges and looks for leads from the traumatized young Saki (Kawaguchi Haruna) whose entire family disappeared. Meanwhile, Yasuko tries to befriend the family next door, but they appear unreceptive except for the strange Nishino (Kagawa Teruyuki) who shields his wife and daughter (Fujino Ryoko) from outside contact and seems to change personality from one minute to the next.

Ambitiously promoted as "the most extreme 108 minutes in Japanese cinema history," Destruction Babies does its best to live up to the title with a wild, violent rampage of youth gone amuck. The first commercial effort from indie darling Mariko Tetsuya (Yellow Kid), the film brings together four of Japan's brightest young talents Yagira Yuya (Nobody Knows), Suda Masaki (The Light Shines Only There), Komatsu Nana (The World of Kanako) and Murakami Nijiro (Still the Water) for a mad, unrelenting assault of teen rebellion and destruction.

Abandoned by their parents, brothers Taira (Yagira Yuya) and Shota (Murakami Nijiro) get by on their own in the quiet seaside town of Mitsuhama, where the silent and aggressive Taira regularly plies the neighborhood looking for fights. One day, Taira suddenly leaves town and heads to the city where he wanders around goading strangers into fights. High school student Yuya (Suda Masaki) sees Taira and enthusiastically joins in. The two turn attacking passersby into a game and then hit the road in a stolen car with Nana (Komatsu Nana) in the backseat.

Directed by Shimoyama Ten, the dazzling 2005 film Shinobi centers on the drama resulting from the war between two ninja clans in the early part of the Tokugawa era. In the film, Nakama Yukie portrays Oboro, the granddaughter of Ogen (Lily), the respected Iga clan matriarch, while Odagiri Jo plays Gennosuke, the son of Danjo Koga (Minoru Terada), the powerful Koga clan leader. While living deep within the mountains, the two ninja clans have honed their skills to superhuman levels. Unfortunately, the clans do not get along and are forbidden by imperial decree from sharing their techniques with each other. Viewing the two ninja clans as a threat to his scheme for total domination, the nefarious Nankobo Tenkai (Ishibashi Renji) plots to intensify the rivalry between the two clans. Nakobo creates a contest in which the clans are forced to choose five of their best warriors to participate. The battle, however, isn't just a friendly contest, it's a duel to the death!

Early in the film, Oboro and Gennosuke meet and fall in love unaware of their clan ties, so when they are both selected to compete they are surprised to discover the truth about one another's identities. Gennosuke initially refuses to participate, but is forced to make an appearance when his compatriots start dropping like flies. The combatants in this contest are not your run-of-the-mill ninja warriors, each has powers beyond that of mortal men. There's the face-changing Saemon Kisaragi (Kinoshita Hoka), the limb-extending Yashamaru (Sakaguchi Taku), the poisonous Kagero (Kurotani Tomoka), and the all-seeing Tenzan Yakushi (Shiina Kippei) just to name a few! Thanks to a great romance plot, breathtaking special effects, and spectacular action choreography, Shinobi offers a one-of-a-kind ninja film that must be seen to be believed!

From the producer of the Always: Sunset on Third Street series comes another heartwarming film that brings a simpler life to its audience. Director Nishikori Yoshinari (A Heart of the Sea) completes his trilogy of films set in his native Shimane Prefecture with Railways. The quiet drama follows a successful company executive - played by Nakai Kiichi (The Magic Hour) - who decides to leave the luxuries of urban life behind and live for himself by pursuing a new career as a train conductor. As expected from such a story, Railways is a gentle, charming, and a little old-fashioned film that might inspire a few people to leave their chaotic, stressful lives behind and change for the better.

Hajime (Nakai Kiichi) is the middle manager at an electronics maker with a wife (Takashima Reiko) who pays too much attention to her shop and a college-age daughter who pays too little attention to her future. When his mother suffers a stroke, Hajime reluctantly returns to Shimane with his daughter for a visit. After several events there make him contemplate his life from a new perspective, he decides to quit his job in Tokyo, move back to his rural village for good, and pursue his boyhood dream of becoming a train conductor. Surprised at being accepted at his age, Hajime initially finds great pleasure and inner peace with his new career, but a life-changing decision like that doesn't come without a price.

Normal Edition Blu-ray comes with an audio commentary by the director, producer, and technical advisor, stage events, trailers, a montage of Shimane Prefecture scenery in high definition, and a booklet.
