Universe Laser Fairy Tale Killer (2012) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
Rp 320.000
Children's stories and horrifying murders go hand in hand in Danny Pang's Fairy Tale Killer. The latest solo project from one of the creators behind Hong Kong horror hit The Eye ditches the supernatural angle but retains the scares and suspense in a gruesome crime thriller about a serial killer that finds inspiration in classic fables. Two acclaimed actors join the filmmaker's cause: Lau Ching Wan (Life Without Principle) stars as the troubled cop on the case, while the usually meek Wang Baoqiang (Mr. Tree) becomes the deranged killer responsible for the bizarre and bloody deaths. The supporting cast includes singer/actress Elanne Kwong (Love Lifting), who flexes her acting muscles again playing an autistic artist, as well as Lam Suet, Elena Kong, and Joey Meng.

At the precinct where Inspector Wong (Lau Ching Wan) is stationed, a man with a serious stutter named Ng (Wang Baoqiang) turns himself in, claiming he has committed murder. The "victim", however, turns out very much alive, so the cops have to let this apparently mentally disturbed man go. But after a couple of days that victim really ends up dead, and soon other bodies begin to turn up one by one, all killed in different but equally grisly manners. Without any clue, Wong struggles to lead the investigation into these strange murders. What they manage to find in the apartment of Ng, the prime suspect, is nothing but a pile of books of fairy tales...

Universe Laser Get Outta Here (2015) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
Rp 314.000
The Hong Kong vampire genre receives a fun twist in director Nick Leung's action-comedy Get Outta Here, which features Alex Lam (Lan Kwai Fong 3) following in the footsteps of his father, Hong Kong superstar George Lam. The elder Lam played a western vampire in the classic 1990 comedy A Bite of Love, and Alex Lam does the same here as Joe, a dapper western vampire who awakens after a century-long slumber in Kowloon. Joe initially has nowhere to go, but he ends up taking a shine to overly-emotional Hong Kong girl Apple (singer J. Arie), and moves into her flat along with her grandmother (Anna Ng) and their British boarder (Gregory Charles Rivers).

Lucky for everyone involved, Joe doesn't like to drink human blood, and he forms a bond with his new flatmates. However, other vampires do lurk in Hong Kong, and they soon side with the greedy land developers angling for Apple's flat. Can Joe protect his new friends from these threats? Get Outta Here offers plenty of topical Hong Kong commentary to go along with its stylish direction and offbeat sense of humor, which involves gags riffing on Hong Kong-style vampires (the slow, hopping types) and a vampire chicken played by "Puppy the Hen". With style, wit and a dash of smarts, Get Outta Here qualifies as one of 2015's more surprising Hong Kong films.

The Detective

Aaron Kwok continues his streak of winning performances with Oxide Pang's The Detective. Set in Thailand, Kwok's latest outing is an immensely entertaining suspense thriller bearing the unmistakable Pang Bros. signature. Bolstered by atmospheric set design and commanding music, the film spins plentiful jumps and scares from an unsettling narrative that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. Fresh off consecutive Best Actor wins at the Golden Horse Awards for Divergence and After This Our Exile, Kwok is perfectly charismatic and at ease as a laid-back Thai-Chinese detective pulled into a mysterious murder case. Kwok is supported by talented character actors Liu Kai Chi (Infernal Affairs 2), Kenny Wong (Gong Tau), Wayne Lai, Kiki Sheung, and Jo Koo, as well as long-time-no-see faces like Shing Fui On and former pop starlet Elle Choi.

Holding shop from a small dinky office, near-sighted, debt-ridden private detective Tam (Aaron Kwok) talks big, but does small business. He gets an interesting new job when hard-drinking friend Lung (Shing Fui Oi) shows up one day with the picture of a woman whom he claims is trying to kill him. Unable to locate the woman, Tam starts looking up her acquaintances, but he seems to always be in the wrong place at the right time. At his first stop, he walks into a man hanging from the ceiling, the first of many dead bodies he stumbles upon. Tam becomes increasingly obsessed with finding the truth behind the mysterious deaths, but digging too deep could have dangerous consequences.

The Detective 2

Four years after unwittingly cracking his first case, Aaron Kwok's inept private eye is back in action with an improved grade in the highly anticipated The Detective 2! Director Oxide Pang's stylish 2007 mystery was considered one of the best solo efforts from the Pang Brothers, and this time he returns to Bangkok with stars Aaron Kwok and Liu Kai Chi for an even more suspenseful adventure. Although the Asian horror-meister has surprisingly dispensed with the supernatural element of the first film, he isn't about to let up on the chill factor. The psychological crime thriller sequel has caught a group of new suspects for the supporting cast, including Patrick Tam, Eddie Cheung, Izz Xu (Child's Eye), and Mainland actress Gong Beibi.

Bumbling private detective Chan Tam (Aaron Kwok) is enlisted by police pal Fung Chak (Liu Kai Chi) to help in the investigation of a serial murder case. The victims - a middle-aged man killed at home, a dead woman found in the trash dump, and a teenage girl slain in the park - were all killed in grisly manners, but they didn't seem related to each other. Veteran Hong Kong actor-director-media personality Kam Kwok Leung writes and directs the off-the-wall magical romance Passion Island. Returning to the director's chair for the first time since 1996's 4 Faces of Eves, the iconic star brings together the eclectic name cast of Simon Yam, Joan Chen, Chang Chen, Francis Ng, Song Jia and Janice Man for an unusual relationship drama on an island named Passion. From giant monkey paintings to magical purple weed, Passion Island wears its artistic strangeness on its sleeve, providing bizarrely memorable moments like Janice Man film-parody fantasy sequences, Chang Chen sneering in Korean and Simon Yam being inexplicably pantless for much of the film. There's also a whale. A true oddball of a movie unlike anything else you've seen, Passion Island entertains, one way or another.

Simon (Simon Yam) is the boss of "Passion Island," an escapist island that produces "Passion Weed" for medicinal and/or hallucinogenic use. Simon's estranged ex-wife Joanna (Joan Chen) arrives on the island with the intention of investigating him and his mysterious purple plant for environmental violations. Chu Yu (Francis Ng) has brought his wheelchair-bound fiancee Fan Li (Song Jia) to the island to seek out the healing properties of Passion Weed. Angry Korean Chuell Kim (Chang Chen) is on the island looking for his missing car with the help of Simon's goddaughter, travel guide Janice (Janice Man). Oddities abound as the couples fight, bond and fight some more under the purplish haze of Passion Island.

Universe Laser Re-Cycle (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
Rp 287.000
The Pang brothers return with another horror movie Re-Cycle which closed Cannes Film Festival's "Un Certain Regard" section. This visually impressive piece stars Angelica Lee who first worked with the Pang brothers in The Eye. She plays a popular author who falls into a eerily beautiful world when writing a supernatural thriller. The Pang brothers employ new CG technologies to create abandoned slums which resemble Hong Kong's long-forgotten demolished walled city, imagined color-drained hills and forests, and a suffocating tunnel with embryos hanging from above. The first half of the film delivers plenty of suspense in the same style as other Pang brothers' film. However, the second half of Re-Cycle, mostly an RPG-like adventure, innovatively weaves into the exquisite setting a sense of spookiness.

Angelica Lee is Ting-yin, a popular author who is stuck with her writing and keeps discarding her ideas. She starts to sense her apartment being haunted. When she steps out of her building, she arrives in a mysterious world where she comes across characters she has created and abandoned. An old man (Lau Siu Ming) tells her that she must go to "The Transit" to leave this place, and a little girl (Tsang Nga Kei) accompanies her to go through one desolate world to another in this inexplicable space... The film concludes with a surprising twist which one will appreciate if he or she follows the clever plot closely.

The sophisticated narrative structure, which at times mixes fiction and reality, makes the film more interesting than what is expected from a normal horror film. Thematically speaking, the attraction of Re-Cycle lies in the notion of abandonment. Ideas discarded and memories forgotten, no matter by an individual or a community, will return to haunt you.

Premiering at the Berlin Film Festival with stops at the Udine Far East Film Festival and the New York Asian Film Festival, Johnnie To's Sparrow is certainly well-traveled. The award-winning director took three years to make this gorgeous little film characterized by vibrant locations and heaps of entertaining style. To enlisted many of his regular players for Sparrow - including Simon Yam, Kelly Lin, Gordon Lam, Lo Hoi Pang, and Lam Suet - and each plays their part with solid, practiced charisma. But this is clearly Johnnie To's show, and the director delivers an engaging cinema love letter demonstrating his affection for both his city and the movies. This whimsical thriller creates a glamorous Hong Kong filled with gentleman pickpockets, elegant damsels, and unspoken honor amongst thieves. As lovely and enjoyable as it is breezy and smart, Sparrow is a Hong Kong movie with grace, wit, and abundant cinematic pleasure.

The dapper Kei (Simon Yam) leads a four-man team of pickpockets (played by Gordon Lam, Kenneth Cheung, and Law Wing Cheong), each adept at relieving unsuspecting tourists of their valuables. But their daily thievery is interrupted when Chung Chun Lei (Kelly Lin) enters their lives, bringing with her an elegance and mystery that immediately attracts. She approaches each man separately, drawing each in like moths to a flame, but what's her angle? Is she a thief? A damsel in distress? And why is she constantly on the run from suit-wearing thugs? Chun Lei most definitely means trouble, as her interference - and a sultry cry for help - threatens the foursome's solidarity. Ever the experienced leader, Kei knows that it's best for pickpockets to keep a very low profile, and desires for his men to attract as little attention as possible. But when Kei's skills are challenged by an elder, more experienced thief, he goes all in, risking everything to help Chun Lei.

In 2007, Bayside Shakedown director Motohiro Katsuyuki brought Hollywood-style contemporary action to Japanese television screens with the late-night drama SP (Security Police). After the series broke rating records in its time-slot and spawned an even more successful drama special, a film version was underway. Two years later, SP arrives in Japanese cinemas with a spectacular two-part film that reportedly took eight long months to film. Written by novelist Kaneshiro Kazuki (who also wrote the series) and produced by Kameyama Chihiro, SP: The Motion Picture brings back V6's Okada Junichi as the Security Police agent with superhuman senses and Tsutsumi Shinichi as his stern boss. With a bigger budget, SP: The Motion Picture - Yabo Hen immediately ups the ante on the action by opening with an exciting 10-minute chase on the streets of Tokyo, leaving Japanese audiences breathless.

Part one of the film - titled Yabo Hen - opens with Inoue Kaoru (Okada Junichi) using his extraordinary powers to thwart another deadly terrorist attack on a charity event. However, Kaoru's rule-breaking ways also earn him stern warnings from his superiors, including his boss Ogata (Tsutsumi Shunichi). At the same time, an ambitious terrorist plot is being hatched deep within the government by government official Kunio (Kagawa Terayuki), putting Kaoru's team in the line of fire.

Producer Johnnie To and director Law Wing Cheong (Hooked On You) team for Tactical Unit - The Code, a sequel to To's award-winning 2003 police noir PTU. Produced as the first in a series of PTU spin-off films, Tactical Unit - The Code was penned by longtime Johnnie To screenwriter Yip Tin Shing, and is filled with the flawed characters, iconic drama and gripping themes that To's Milkyway Image studio is known for. The film premiered in Hong Kong at the 5th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival before making its home video debut. Another sequel, Tactical Unit - Comrades in Arms made its theatrical debut in early 2009.

A CCTV camera records three unidentified police officers brutalizing a triad member, and a decorated Police Tactical Unit squad led by Sam (Simon Yam) soon comes under suspicion. When the triad member turns up as a suspect in a parallel investigation, the PTU find themselves competing with law enforcement agency CAPO (Complaints Against Police Office) to find the suspect. Original PTU cast members Simon Yam, Maggie Siu and Lam Suet return for this meaty crime drama about the flawed individuals behind the badges, and the necessity for these men and women to look out for their own - no matter the cost.

Johnnie To's Milkyway Image films scores again with Tactical Unit - Comrades in Arms. Director Law Wing Cheong (Hooked on You) highlights the flaws of his PTU protagonists, while also paying tribute to their teamwork and camaraderie under pressure. Possessing of the sly irony and wit that Milkyway's popular crime films are known for, Comrades in Arms delivers smart thrills and a helping of iconic action, with the film's climactic shootout taking place at a remote church on the Hong Kong border. Tactical Unit - Comrades in Arms opened on Hong Kong screens in early 2009 to solid critical acclaim.

The PTU squad is disbanding, but the circumstances could be more ideal. Leaders Sam (Simon Yam) and May (Maggie Siu) are at odds, with the team evenly split between them. A routine collar goes bad when the team bickers over who will be credited for the arrest, and the tension spills over to their celebration party, with insults hurled and punches thrown. Meanwhile, demoted CID Fat Lo (Lam Suet) is on thin ice with superior officer Ho (Ben Wong). As if things couldn't get worse, the team is sent on a final mission: a group of vicious thieves have escaped to the bordering hills, and every available PTU member is called in to sweep the area. The area's twisting tunnels, confusing landscape and murky fog present even more obstacles, making their assignment unpredictable and dangerous. With even the forces of nature against them, can the PTU squad pull it together for this one final mission?

Universe Laser Knock Knock! Who's There? (2015) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
Rp 320.000
Half a year after co-directing Angel Whispers, veteran actress Carrie Ng makes her solo directorial debut with the horror film Knock Knock! Who's There? Composed of three vignettes, the film has a distinct Hong Kong flavor that recalls the city's 1990s cult horror movies.

In "Headless," Annie Liu plays Isabella, a woman who has everything going for her. In a bid to flee from the paparazzi, she and her socialite fiance get into a car accident that decapitates her. Now a spirit, Isabella is surprised to find that her undertaker is none other than her first love, Roy (Babyjohn Choi).

"Cat-Planting" follows Sau Yong (Kate Tsui), a young woman who was born with the ability to see the dead. She lives with her aunt Ngo (Carrie Ng) and uncle Fat Tong (Simon Lui), two gambling addicts. After a string of bad luck at the gambling table, Ngo decides to engage in a bout of "cat-planting," and unfortunately for Sau Yong, she accidentally witnesses the bloody, cruel "ritual." After this, Sau Yong's behavior takes a turn for the strange.

"Corpse Aroma" tells the story of Yan (Jennifer Tse), a mortuary makeup artist who loves to meet new female friends. One day, she picks up a phone from the street and starts to engage in a text conversation with a mysterious girl. After a period of getting to know one another, the girl asks Yan to help her find something she's lost.

Hong Kong martial arts superstars Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung star in this explosive crime thriller from director Wilson Yip. Inspector Chan (Simon Yam) has a grudge to bear and a personal vendetta against local mob boss Wong Po (Sammo Hung). Seemingly untouchable and surrounded by an army of faceless young hoodlums, Wong Po holds the city in a vice-like grip.

It is 1997 and in anticipation of Hong Kong's imminent handover back to Mainland China, Inspector Ma (Donnie Yen) is sent in to take over Chan's unit. Chan has just three days to bring Ma up to speed before he retires, not just letting him in on Wong Po and his dealings, but also making sure Ma understands the Hong Kong way of doing things. The virtuous, crusading Ma, however, is determined to play by the book, but equally committed to bringing Wong Po and his empire crashing to the ground.

Slick, stylish and uncompromising, SPL is without doubt one of the best Hong Kong movies of the new millennium, harking back to the glory days of the 1980s with its themes of loyalty, honor and duty, as well as its flashy action sequences and staggering fight choreography. Yen, who also served as action director on the film, saves all of the film's best moments for himself, namely a double bill of ferociously violent encounters. The already infamous alleyway knife fight against Wong Po's top henchman, played by the dazzling Wu Jing, leads up to the film's explosive finale as Donnie and Sammo square off in one of the most eagerly-anticipated match-ups of this, or any, year.

For any discernible fan of action, Asian or martial arts movies, cop thrillers, bullet ballets or heroic bloodshed operatics, SPL is the movie you have been waiting for.

Universe Laser Ip Man: The Final Fight (2013) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
Rp 280.000
In 2010, producer Checkley Sin and director Herman Yau explored Ip Man the righteous, patriotic Wing Chun grandmaster in The Legend is Born Ip Man. Three years later, the team shows us a more human side of Master Ip with Ip Man: The Final Fight. People know Ip Man as the Wing Chun grandmaster that defeated Japanese soldiers, racist boxers and Zhang Ziyi on the big screen. However, The Final Fight depicts a later stage of Master Ip's life as a humble Wing Chun teacher in 1950s and 1960s Hong Kong. Based on anecdotes about Master Ip's life directly from his son Ip Chun, the action drama shows the master as a normal man who simply wanted to pass on the art of Wing Chun to his students, even as labor unrest, corruption and crime swept the rapidly developing city. At the same time, he is also a respected figure who would not hesitate to go into action to protect his students.

In this latest take on the martial arts legend, award-winning actor Anthony Wong takes up the role of Master Ip in a dignified and commanding performance. One of the best actors in Hong Kong, Wong not only learned Wing Chun especially for the role, he also became the only actor to adapt Ip's real-life Foshan accent. Joining Wong is a strong supporting cast that includes Jordan Chan (Young and Dangerous), Anita Yuen (Prot g ), Zhou Chu Chu (Dream Home), Gillian Chung (Twins Effect), Timmy Hung, Jiang Luxia, Xiong Xin Xin (Once Upon a Time in China) and Eric Tsang.

In 1949, 56-year-old Ip Man (Anthony Wong) leaves Foshan in search of a new life in Hong Kong. After an impromptu sparring match, Ip takes up his first disciple, Leung Seung (Timmy Hung). With Seung's help, Ip establishes a makeshift Wing Chun school on an apartment building's rooftop. Eventually, Ip attracts a group of loyal students from all walks of life, including a policeman, a factory laborer, a tram driver and others. As his students face troubles inside and outside of the school over the years, Master Ip remains a strong, unwavering moral figure in their lives.
